Sandra Wilkin President Bradford Construction Corporation
A trailblazer in the construction industry, Sandra Wilkin has helped set a standard as one of New York’s leading woman contractors. Her work in support of woman and minority owned businesses has raised both the level of opportunity for women to succeed in the world of small and mid-sized businesses, as well as a greater appreciation for the value of diversity on the part of industry leaders. The recipient of numerous awards, including Professional Women in Construction, the Kingsborough Community College Wall of Fame and the Trailblazer Award from the Regional Alliance for Small Business Contractors, the Brooklyn-born and raised Ms. Wilkin’s background proved remarkable preparation for her construction industry success. It was in the field of health care that she developed a special understanding of the unique design and construction criteria necessary for building health care facilities. Out of the awareness she took a bold step and established a woman owned construction firm, Bradford Construction Company.
Over the past 20 years Ms. Wilkin has built her company into one of the leading women owned construction firms, earning her the title of “a hard hat with style” from the Crain’s New York Business publication. Under her direction as President of Bradford Construction she has built a reputation for supplying innovative and cost saving solutions to difficult problems for not-for-profit organizations, public and health care facilities clients. Recent construction projects include: an 80 million dollar NYC school renovation project; the construction of the Harlem United Show House, to benefit AIDS community outreach programs; participation in a 40 million dollar improvement of residential housing for the NYC Housing Authority; and numerous health care projects, including the first free-standing PET SCAN radiology complex in the northeast. Ms. Wilkin’s firm is also the owner and developer of medical buildings. Her company, by taking a leadership role, led the way to an alliance between the building industry, trades and apprenticeship labor programs that resulted in the successful renovation of New York’s only drop in center for elderly homeless, Peter’s Place.
Ms. Wilkin is the first woman to serve on the Executive Board of the Regional Alliance for Small Contractors, and one of the first women to serve on the Executive Board of the New York Building Congress and also serves on the Board of Governors of the New York Building Foundation, and also serves on the Board of Directors for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation. Ms. Wilkin is a past member of the Contractors Committee for both the City of New York and the NYC Health and Hospital Corporation. Sandra Wilkin continues to act as a verbal advocate for Minority and Woman Owned Businesses, appearing frequently as a public speaker, and promoting needs of the small business community. Sandra Wilkin is a graduate of Kingsborough Community College, was awarded a B.S. in Business and Public Administration from New York University, and a Diploma in Construction Management from NYU. She also received a B.S. in Nursing from Hunter College. Sandra Wilkin is the proud mother of Allison and Edward. |
